Seth Godin is my idol.
I’m sure I could probably give you about a thousand reasons why I think he’s hot stuff, but the fact is, none of them would matter, because you’ve got your own idols, and for the same reasons.
A person means something to you, in your business, and you find ways to emulate them. You don’t plagiarize them, but what they are doing works, so you copy their style and add your own fiz. I remember in the glory days, when we were all kicking off this money machine they call the internet, Seth was one of the early guys who captured my attention. I thought it was way cool that he had a blog, not on his own domain.
He rocked it. He was so popular on his non-owner blog domain that everyone knew where to find him, even though he didn’t have his own domain. Then, he got a domain. Confusing.
But he’d done what was required to make money online, built awareness of his shiny bald dome and brand identity (everyone knows him by site or name), developed relationships with the people who became part of his tribe, and then he took action and sold something of value to them.
That’s what it takes.
What do you have that’s valuable? What are you marketing?
Are you visible? Do people know where to find you?
Do you even have a tribe? Who have you built relationships with?
